The Church's role in all of this is first and foremost to be the gateway through which every person and all of human society receives life in Christ. This is done in virtue of his primacy over the entire Church in order to more fully provide for the necessities of the entire flock of the Lord and in consideration of the common good. The bonds which bind men to the Church in a visible way are profession of faith, the sacraments, and ecclesiastical government and communion. And it is intimated also in the practice, introduced in ancient times, of summoning several bishops to take part in the elevation of the newly elected to the ministry of the high priesthood. A Brief Look At "Lumen Gentium" In 1959, Pope John XXIII convened the Second Vatican Council. With it He set up a covenant. Rom. (22) Conc.
